In my case i have the same laptop: HP 6735s, and i have the same issue. i try totem and vlc, when i see a dvd at some random point all the system freezes.
All graphical enviroment hangs up. i try to restart gdm (ctrl+alt+backspace) but no response. Also i try to open other tty console. i put mi login and password but stay there without show any prompt.
