Sorry, meant to add my details in previous post. 32-bit Ubuntu, 9.10 (fresh install over 8.10), kernel 2.6.31-14-pae-i686. Happening on different FAT external drives so not hardware (or filesystem) related. I'm also getting: "nautilus:6644): Eel-CRITICAL **: eel_preferences_get_boolean: assertion `preferences_is_initialized ()' failed" in terminal
