Public bug reported:

When I boot and during running of Ubuntu 9.10 I have access to my
external Esata drive, a Western Digital 1TB My Book, however when I shut
down there are various error messages and the external drive is then in
a "hung state". I cannot reboot the computer until I power off the
external drive as well. When using Windows Vista, Win7 etc, there is no
need to so forcible power off the hard drive, as in Windows it
automatically shuts down. Whatever signals Ubuntu is sending is, as I
said earlioer, locking the hard drive.
