** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: kdebase-workspace

This is a regression, as KWin compositing/effects worked well under
  Jaunty.

There are some bug reports already mentioning how KWin effects are
  always disabled on login:

  https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/424866
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/377704
  https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=202274

I am also experiencing this, but when effects are manually enabled, the
performance is atrocious - there is a noticeable delay
moving/resizing/minimising windows etc, and the framerate drops very low
- (under 15fps according to the 'show fps' effect plugin).
+ (under 15fps according to the 'show fps' effect plugin). See
+ https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=191694.
+
+ I don't believe this is a duplicate of the "effects disabled on login"
+ bugs but may be related.

With the same xorg.conf, Compiz runs like a beast and looks great, so
there is something KWin-specific going on here.
