I think I found the cause. This version of PAN uses "xterm" as the default editor. Not only that, the default HTML is "mosilla."
In Ubuntu had to change the HTML handler to "firefox," and the editor to "gedit." I can now send a new post in PAN without PAN closing, just the editor closes.
