I'm having almost the same here! I have 2 HDs, the first had only the Ubuntu 9.04 32-bit version instaled and the second has Windows XP.
I decided to format the one with Ubuntu, to install the 9.10 64-bit version. (my PC suports amd64) After install via Live CD, the boot always stop at this Grub Error 2.
