After thinking this bug wasn't fixed in karmic (tested with a system upgraded from jaunty and with the live cd), the problem suddenly seems to be solved (same system, no fresh install!) (no drop outs since 3 days, the download rates are not as constant as with LAN but ok). The wifi LED started blinking again though.
