I have the same problem.  After suspending, pressing the power button
causes the system to start but the power light continues to flash for a
bit (as it does when suspended).  It then sits there doing nothing - no
kernel panic flashing lights and no CPU load (judging by the fan).
Again, in my case, pm-suspend works (having tried it after reading this
bug report).  Intel Centrino laptop; ATI 9700 graphics; no binary
drivers.  Worked fine in Kubuntu 9.04.  Sorry - you'll have to tell me
what to do to supply more debug info.
