The floppy can be mounted with mount /dev/fd0 as fstab contains /dev/fd0 /media/floppy0 auto rw,user,noauto,exec,utf8 0 0 If the floppy is not mounted, clicking "Places | Floppy Drive" causes the activity light on the floppy to flash, but nothing else.
