Is there anyway the Remote Desktop viewer can give you feedback about
what you are experiencing?

I'm trying to connect to an desktop computer running Ubuntu 9.10 Desktop
32bit on my LAN.

I'm trying to connect from my laptop running Ubuntu 9.10 Desktop 64bit.

I've setup the host machine to accept remote desktop request using
System > Preferences > Remote Desktop.

>From my laptop, Applications > Internet > Remote Desktop Viewer I am
trying to connect to the host, I can display its desktop on my laptop.

SSH works fine, but VNC (by the way, instead of VNC it should say
"Graphical Connection (vnc)" and "Command Line Connection (ssh)" for new
user's sake) I get to a black screen, but no desktop is shown.

After attempting the connection, I went into the other room expecting to
see a connection request notification on the host machine, but no
notification was displayed.

I've turned off the fire wall on the host machine using gufw, but I
still get the same results.

Is there anyway the Viewer could give you more feedback? Is there any
way that it could detect that all it is displaying is a black screen and
no desktop? Is there anyway that it could provide trouble shooting
automatically when results like this occur?

Also, if the firewall is a common obstacle, why doesn't the viewer point
this out, and tell you how the firewall needs to be configured? What
ports need to be open, etc?

We've got to make this easier for newbies.

I'm puzzled. This stuff use to work in 9.04.
