You're still using linux-backports-modules-alsa-karmic-generic's alsa-driver, not the snapshot you compiled. Purge linux-backports-modules-2.6.31-14-generic, and reinstall the 20091110 alsa-driver stable snapshot. -- internal mic not working in ubuntu 9.04/9.10 etc...
