I also do not have linux-backports-modules-alsa-karmic-generic installed, and I can not think of a reason that I would look for such a package. I will install it now. So far the bug remains. Sound occasionally disappears and I have not found what I need to restart(so far I try several /etc/init.d entries) so that it can get back to me.
