I'm having the same problem with my Maudio 2496 with the envy24 chip. ALSA has been removed and replace with opensound drivers. Device is recognized by OS and drivers - mixer will even show audio activity on channels. But nothing will make sound (VLC, Firefox/Flash, etc.).
Trying to set default sound card hangs with "waiting for sound device" then exits. I can post logs,etc. but, for now, just wanted to throw some support behind this bug report. Very frustrating......
