Jeno, I don't think you need to downgrade in Karmic... The stock kernel should support the modem. Mine takes a while to show up, though (about 1-2 minutes after plugging it in). Make sure you have the package 'usb- modeswitch' installed. You don't have to download it from the debian pool either, It's now included in Karmic, so just apt-get install it.
