Same problem on the new dell of my brother in law. Seems that Karmic is not usable on this laptop and because of the lack of reaction from the devs no interesting input can be given. I will try to find an answer, to test if it's gnome related but there are big chance that christmas will be a good time to migrate him to a more reliable distribution.
