Had the permission issues with Karmic also. Original box was upgraded from Jaunty....and all mounts showed up as ro, without being able to fix it with an rw setting. Directories mounted into also had their ownership changed to root.
file_mode=0777,dir_mode=0777 fixed the permission problems....this is with smbfs.
