Thanks Jesse! The behaviour I see is exactly as described in bug #435352 (of which #455408 is a duplicate). The fix described there of blacklisting uvcvideo worked! No webcam (which didn't work anyway in karmic) but USB hotplugging works (mouse, kbd, disk-on-key)!
