there are a lot of duplicates or similar bug reports, so i don’t know
which one was the one, i was encountering.

also i had problems with my graphics card and installed and uninstalled
a lot of packages. nevertheless:

my ttys were broken with weird random noisy color, but were still
responsive (entering username and password, then emitting sounds, or
touching files)—both with proprietary nvidia driveres and open source nv
drivers.

i don't know why, but sometime in the process i typed grub --version in
a terminal, which printed grub 0.97something to the terminal. i was
confused, since i thought karmic upgraded to grub2 and i already
executed the necessary commands to upgrade my old grub installation to
the new one. all files in /boot/grub were there with old grub, so i
thought it was grub2. but those files were never be used.

after installing grub2 (sudo apt-get install grub-pc) all my ttys work
again now. with nv as well as with nvidia. hope this hopes people with
similar bugs
