In comment 80, two bugs were isolated. The "workaround" for the second part was nomodeset. If you use it, the workaround for the 1st part is xrandr --output LVDS --set BACKLIGHT_CONTROL native and you get back the 8 levels of backlight control. It may help for the second part too except that, because of bug 428054 (it is a duplicate but I am not sure that the main bug looks for the same problem), you cannot set BACKLIGHT_CONTROL on LVDS1 to native (in fact disable software BACKLIGHT_CONTROL if I understand). If it is so, it may help to raise 397617 bug status from low to at least medium.
