Hi chaps, my machine appears to have corrected itself (little thanks to me). yesterday evening I tried various options and attempted a (normal) re- boot several times without success. However the last thing I tried (after forcing the machine to boot using the method described earlier) I ran the Hardware Drivers option found under Administration. Unlike the earlier version of Ubuntu (9.04) it recognised that I had a Nvidia graphics chipset (ION mini-ITX motherboard with integrated Geforce 9400M graphics) and recommended installing the relevant driver for enabling 3D acceleration. I did so and, after some hesitation in the boot-up immediately thereafter, the machine now runs (and boots up!!) just fine.
Again I am very impressed with the work your community has done on Ubuntu Linux. I am a recent Windows convert and, given my scant knowledge of Linux, this is the first real hiccup I have had with what is otherwise an outstanding operating system. Thanks again for your massive contribution.
