I found a fix. There was an empty "default.pa" file in my ~/.pulse/ directory. When I deleted it, everything went back to normal. I don't know / remember why it was there, but everything worked perfectly fine before the upgrade to karmic. And the file was already there - it didn't prevent volume-control from starting either. Is this some kind of a strange regression?
