Some additional info. The grub detected windows xp correctly. Windows is installed in /dev/sda1 and ubuntu in /dev/sdb1. Before loading grub menu, the hard disk is under full work for about half a minute or more. (A machine like sound can also be heard). Such a thing I have not encountered from dapper to jaunty.
