Well maybe on AWN, but with the small icons of the Netbook Remix setup
taskbar, I can only see a colored square. I am currently using the
"Conversation Badger" plugin which replace the buddy avatar by its status
icon (green circle for available etc). It's not very good for the Netbook
Remix taskbar either because icons are the only way to distinguish between
two windows. So to have only one conversation window I keep every
conversation tabbed in the same window.

I agree there are many sources of confusion for newcomers.... The default
setup doesn't seem that bad after all.
