I got a related problem. I network upgraded to ubuntu 9.10 64bit and there showed no more Chinese input method in Scim. I switched to ibus, but the Chinese input methods under ibus seem not include "Smart pinyin" method, which is my best choice in Ubuntu. Now I feel pain with the input methods in ibus. But of course, the Chinese Input Methods in ibus work. (although I did not find "Smart pinyin" there)
