I don't know if this is related, but initially, I was trying to keep hda6 as my home partition, but the installed kept complaining that it couldn't mount it.
I couldn't sudo mount it from a terminal either, but if I boot using a different Linux liveCD (RIP), then I can mount it, and it worked fine with my previous installation (Gentoo).
