I retried with Kubuntu Deskop i386 20091026.1. Dpkg -l says the live system has ubiquity 2.0.4. I started installing twice, but didn't go past the keyboard selection screen either time. In both cases, the installer screen appeared properly, and the other virtual terminals did not display static. So far, so good!
