Public bug reported: In Feisty LiveCD on my laptop, after the user "ubuntu" is automatically logged in then the desktop starts to render and then there is a sub- second of audio and the desktop just freezes. I can reset the desktop (Ctrl-Alt-Backspace), however the cycle just repeats.
I then found that if I kill the most recent of the two esd's that are running (killed from the console, Ctrl-Alt-F1) then the desktop resumes loading no problem. $ sudo lspci -v shows: 00:14.5 Multimedia audio controller: ATI Technologies Inc IXP150 AC'97 Audio Controller Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Unknown device 006b Flags: bus master, 66MHz, slow devsel, latency 64, IRQ 5 Memory at e8003000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=256] 00:14.6 Modem: ATI Technologies Inc IXP AC'97 Modem (rev 01) (prog-if 00 [Generic]) Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Unknown device 006b Flags: bus master, 66MHz, slow devsel, latency 64, IRQ 5 Memory at e8003400 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=256] Also occurs after I've installed Feisty and booted from the hard drive. Other information: using Control Center, I can turn off the startup sound and the desktop will subsequently load the desktop during startup after booting from the hard drive, however I have no workaround for this when using the LiveCD. Additionally, strangely enough, the problem appears to be affected by whether or not the laptop is on AC power during startup. On battery, this problem is intermittent, versus it will consistently fail when on AC.
