I know that this is no forum but may I ask if compiz works for you (at all)?
If I look at your screenshot it looks pretty much like my Desktop after I tried the 9.10 RC live-CD with disabled compiz. Even worse: when enabling compiz I get artifacts all over my Desktop. As I have an IBM X31 too so this might be related. I will attach my screenshots.
