Emacs23, which now uses GTK (by default, it seems), is also affected by this bug. As for firefox, I can fix it by properly creating ~/.fonts.conf...
I'm not a GTK guru so I don't know if applications developers have to implement manually the "connection" between font usage and Gnome font configuration or if GTK should do it automatically, but that makes 3 apps I've seen suffering from this problem.
