Also happening for me in Karmic. The fix outlined above: "Patching /etc/kernel/postinst.d/dkms to redirect stdout DOES FIX the problem. Adding "1>&2" to the invocation of /etc/init.d/dkms_autoinstaller keeps stdout clean."
