Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pulseaudio

Hi,

I just updated from jaunty to the karmic RC. I am using the KDE desktop,
but originally installed this system as vanilla ubuntu back in the days
of Dapper Drake.

When rebooting after the update, I got a window "Removed Sound Devices" with
the text:
"KDE detected that one or more internal sound devices were removed.
*Do you want KDE to permanently forget about these devices?*
This is the list of devices KDE thinks can be removed:
- Output: NVidia CK8S, NVidia CK8S - IEC958 (IEC958 (S/PDIF) Digital Audio
Output)"
[ ] Do not ask again for these devices
[Yes] [No] [Manage Devices]

This window also appears everytime I open System Settings -> Multimedia.

In the "Device Preference" list of System Settings -> Multimedia, there are 3
selectable devices:
- PulseAudio
- NVidia CK8S with ALC850 (NVidia CK8S)
- NVidia CK8S with ALC850 (NVidia CK8S - IEC958)

There's also another item:
- NVidia CK8S, NVidia CK8S - IEC958 (IEC958 (S/PDIF) Digital Audio Output)
(this is the one KDE wants to "forget") This one is greyed out and not
selectable.

There is also another disabled item without any label, having the Oxygen
sound file icon. The others have a sound card icon.

Selecting one of the devices in this list, I can test them clicking the "Test"
button.
The test shows that the second device from above, "NVidia CK8S with ALC850
(NVidia CK8S)", does play the test sound perfectly. The two other selectable
devices play nothing. Setting "NVidia CK8S with ALC850 (NVidia CK8S)" to the
top of the list does not enable sound for me in the rest of my system, since
everything seems to be configured to run with pulseaudio.

Before upgrading from jauty to karmic, padevchooser showed my sound card in the
Devices tab.
Now, it shows only one Sink (auto_null: Dummy Output) and one Source
(auto_null.monitor: Monitor of Dummy Output)
So, even though some part of KDE knows my sound card and can play sound on it,
pulseaudio does not find it.

I attached the output of "$ pulseaudio -vvvv". Interesting might be the
following part:
D: module-udev-detect.c: /dev/snd/controlC1 is accessible: no
D: module-udev-detect.c: /dev/snd/controlC0 is accessible: no
I: module-udev-detect.c: Found 2 cards.

The card also appears in /proc/asound:
$ cat /proc/asound/cards
 0 [CK8S ]: NFORCE - NVidia CK8S
                      NVidia CK8S with ALC850 at irq 22
 1 [USB2 ]: USB-Audio - WinTV USB2
WinTV USB2 at usb-0000:00:02.2-2, high speed

A symlink in /proc/asound is also existent: CK8S -> card0. In card0/
(codec97#0 id intel8x0 oss_mixer pcm0c pcm0p pcm1c pcm2p) all
looks normal as well, as far as I can tell (that's not far, though). If
you need more info of that, I will be happy to attach more /proc info
about the card.

lspci and so on should be in the apport attachements, I hope. Please
tell me, if you need any more information! I really need sound on this
machine :/

thank you,
- kbit
