I decided to turn off the graphical effects as they seem to be slow down
the old hardware unnecessarily. When I switched the "Visual Effects" to
"None", the black screen disappeared and the Desktop was shown. The
"Visual Effects" were working for my old gfx card "RV280 [Radeon 9200
SE]" in 9.04.

When I revert the setting back to "Normal", the Desktop turns black
again and in  /var/log/messages I get the following entries:
