However, the desktop seems to be operational, because when I select "Create Folder..." from the context menu and type "abc", I can find it in the Desktop folder when looking into it via terminal.
Also when clicking right mouse button on the left side of the screen the context menu changes to a longer list which shows entries for tar.gz archives.
