Have done some more testing and concluded that it actually boots all the way to the desktop.
After boot is finished and the cd spinns down I can hit Alt-F2, type sudo reboot, and the reboot is initated. Tried with another monitor (TFT, previously only tried with CRT). Same results. The TFT monitor complains about "scanning out of range" when I push it's auto-adjust button.
