Yes, GMail adds an auto-bcc to yourself for any message sent through SMTP-MSA, this isn't IMAP or POP specific.
This does mean you don't need to automatically save a copy in the sent folder. That said, if you do save a copy in the sent folder, our duplicate detection should detect that and you should only end up with one. This requires that the two messages are nearly identical, in particular they need to have the same subject and message-id, at least. This bug normally indicates that the message being appended to the sent folder doesn't have a message-id, and the client is relying on the smtp server to add a message-id. This means the message will end up with two different message ids (gmail will add one to APPEND messages as well, we require messages to have one). Hope this helps.
