I had a friend at Intel test the cd image yesterday from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/20091020.3/karmic-desktop-i386.iso and he reported that on a 8x Prestonia (Xeon) system with 6G memory, it correctly reported the right amount in K. Not sure if this helps, as it was a server type system instead of a desktop and not the dvd image.
