Steve, Given Colin's suggestion that this may already be fixed via bug 394338, can you please test with a recent daily-live CD (http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/kubuntu/daily-live)? If the install is still failing, please run `apport-collect 395799` in a terminal window when the installer crashes.
