I've come across the error as well, when attempting to move my setup (which includes a "master boot partition" which chainloads partition- based grub setups) from -legacy to grub2; where -legacy functioned perfectly. I however chickened out and reverted to -legacy, so I cannot comment the fact if grub2 does work at all when booting from a partition boot record.
