Public bug reported:

I did an upgrade from 2.6.31-14-generic that downloaded a bunch of packages.
About 80% of the way through the package install, I was kicked out of X back to
a frozen gdm screen.
A evilaim person on #ubuntu+1 claimed to see the same problem.

I fixed the issue by
1. reverting to the -12 kernel,
2. doing sudo apt-get --reconfigure -a
   I don't think that helped,
3. more reboots
4. sudo apt-get install --reinstall linux-image-2.6.31-14-generic
5. reboot into single user
6. reboot as per usual.

Hope this helps.
