I just tried this with today's updates:

"1) Issue: Both the disk AND the partition are displayed (eg. /dev/sdb &
/dev/sdb1) (see no-abstraction.png) Expected: One abstracted device."

This only happens if I insert the key *after* starting USB creator.

If I insert the key and start USB creator *after* inserting it, I see
only one abstracted device, however it still indicates the device name,
not its "friendly" description. This should be reported separately.

"2) Format button is available for both of them. (see no-abstraction.png)
Expected: Only show one abstracted device. Standard format creates 1 FAT
partition."
Not relevant once 1) works, which seems to be the case now.

"3) Format button is clickable when no usb disk is available. (see
no-usb-format.png)
Expected: Gray out button when no USB disk is available."
I still have this minor cosmetic issue. This should be reported separately.

"4) DBus error: unable to mount <disk_label>
org.gtk.Private.RemoteVolumeMonitor.NotFound: The given volume was not found
(see dbus-err.png)
Expected: Format disk and start copying files"
Yep, got the same error, but only when formatting "/dev/sdb". Formatting
"/dev/sdb1" worked for me but then I had to click again on it. I've marked this
bug as "Medium" importance.

5) Application crashes (see Bug #439595 & Bug #439637 for apport crash logs)
Expected: Should copy files at this point (after formatting)

I couldn't make the app crash in several tests. Once I was able (through
trial and error) to select the correct device (/dev/sdb*), format it,
then select it *again*, I was able to create the expected bootable USB
key.
