Public bug reported:

Performed a dist-upgrade from Edgy->Feisty this morning. The upgrade went well,
but after reboot, the screen would remain blank where usually GDM would appear.
Ctrl-Alt-F[1-6] did not work, however the system was not frozen since num-lock
still toggled and Ctrl-Alt-Delete worked.

Booting in recovery mode worked, and I could also do a succesful startx
as root. After trying some X configuration options I removed 'splash'
from the kernel command-line, and this resolved the problem.

I seems like usplash is somehow not releasing its console. I don't think
it's limited to my video card (though I have no way of testing other
cards).

$ uname -a
Linux master 2.6.20-8-generic #2 SMP Tue Feb 13 05:18:42 UTC 2007 i686 GNU/Linux
$  dpkg -la usplash
ii usplash 0.4-41 Userspace bootsplash utility
$ grep Driver /etc/X11/xorg.conf
[...]
Driver          "nv"

Note: I found multiple bugs similar to this one, but none seemed to target
Feisty specifically (everything worked in Edgy). I'm sorry if this is a
duplicate
