@Rob Speer: #3: I guess it has nothing to do with auto-logging. It has to do with caching. When you log in the second time it is smoother because the majority of the files needed are already loaded.
#4: It might have been slowed down by bootchart, but if Apple and Microsoft can do it with Snow Leopard and Windows 7, there is no excuse why Ubuntu shouldn't.
