#3: I guess it has nothing to do with auto-logging. It has to do with
caching. When you log in the second time it is smoother because the
majority of the files needed are already loaded.

#4: It might have been slowed down by bootchart, but if Apple and
Microsoft can do it with Snow Leopard and Windows 7, there is no excuse
why Ubuntu shouldn't.

BTW, my Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop behaves as described in the
description.
