Seems this was fixed in Ubuntu 6.10. By the way, "ati" and "radeon" are exactly the same driver (both refer to xserver-xorg-video-ati), the "ati" is just a wrapper that delegates the control to the radeon-part of the driver. Unfortunately auto-detection in "ati" had problems in the past, which made people believe there's some difference in the drivers.
