I don't think I can run it in debug mode from the initial screen, can I?
ie the one that appears immediately after boot where it says 'Try
Ubuntu.../Install Ubuntu/...'.?

I did an earlier installation (admittedly from the amd64 ISO) where I
installed from the 'Try Ubuntu...' instead of 'Install Ubuntu' and I
didn't see these problems, so it's possible it's related to choosing
'Install Ubuntu'. The differences between the two installs were:

* I ran the amd64 install from 'Try Ubuntu...' and told it to encrypt
the home directory, did manual partitioning, and installed in on my main
PC. This one seemed to work fine, except that I can't switch to a tty
console (ctrl-alt-f1 etc does nothing).

* I ran the i386 install from 'Install Ubuntu', didn't tell it to
encrypt the home directory, told it to automatically partition, and
installed in a VirtualBox VM.

The reason that smb: didn't work is that gvfs-backends wasn't installed.

I can try the VM install from the 'Install Ubuntu' menu in debug to see
if it does the same thing, but is a way to make it emulate installing
from the front screen?
