I have the same problem: my wifi is not even detected. in Ubuntu 9.04 and 8.10 
my wifi works fine if I install the proprietary driver.
I attached the result of this command excuted in my Ubuntu 9.10 Beta:
$dmesg > dmesg.log

in my Ubuntu 9.04 here what I have :
$ lsmod | grep "wl"
wl                   1281364  0 
ieee80211_crypt        13444  2 ieee80211_crypt_tkip,wl

$ uname -a
Linux alaya-zied-laptop 2.6.28-15-generic #52-Ubuntu SMP Wed Sep 9 10:49:34 UTC 
2009 i686 GNU/Linux
