On another laptop equipped with an ati video card I updated the kernel first and the problem was not fixed. Afterwards, I updated the packages usplash and libusplash0 (among others) from version 0.5.43 to version 0.5.44 and it seemed to fix the problem. I don't think it is related to any specific video card, I do think it was a problem with usplash (and/or its library libusplash0).
