I have Radeon Xpress 200M, an Acer Aspire 5100 and the same problem. It goes to suspend mode, but it doesn´t resume. Karmic beta 2.6.31-14-generic now. I must shut down in the hard way.
Today, after the hard reboot today, /etc/mtab was corrupted. My lappie didn´t boot again because of problems with mounting. I looked with live-CD. /etc/mtab was empty.
