Even in the case where you don't want gdm to run ( e.g. passing "text" in the kernel parameters ) the current logic is still inelegant as the respawn means that the 'exit 0' statement causes the script to run multiple times before being stopped as spawning too fast. The end behaviour may be as intended, but.....
