What's the point of marking a bug incomplete without asking for any extra information/testing?
I have the same problem with mplayer-nogui 2:1.0~rc3+svn20090426-1ubuntu9 on karmic amd64. The above error message and no fonts in the OSD texts. Adding -fontconfig fixes it. I already purged and reinstalled mplayer/mplayer-nogui and moved ~/.mplayer out of the way, none of which made any difference.
