Rod40cool's instructions worked for me once I read the added comment

The workaround above works, with "device=hw:M44".

I understood what to do.

I have broken my computer by typing things in to Terminal that I did not
understand, so I try to be more cautious now.

After I rebooted the computer, glorious sound was heard, but I also
received the attached warning.

I followed the directions

victo...@ubuntu-home:~$ asoundconf set-default-card M44
victo...@ubuntu-home:~$ 

As you can see here, Terminal did not give me any confirmation.

However, the sound still works.
